Embracing Change: Out with the Old...

Writer: LaTammie RawlsLaTammie Rawls

Integrating formal and informal learning is more important than ever in today's world. With technology's versatility, instruction is no longer limited to the classroom. Students can learn anytime, anywhere.

However, there are still many advantages to formal learning environments.

Formal learning environments provide

structure and support that can be beneficial to

students. In addition, formal learning

environments allow teachers to scaffold

instruction and provide support when needed.

Integrating formal and informal learning can help students take advantage of all available resources. For example, students can use online resources to review concepts learned in class or explore new topics independently. By combining these two types of learning, students can get the best of both worlds – the structure and support of a formal learning

environment with the flexibility and freedom

of an informal learning environment. Learners

also have the opportunity to showcase creativity.

This is my struggle at the moment. I am not quite sure what choice looks like in a secondary math classroom. I know it is for the benefit of my students to give up control. I will continue to find tools and resources to lead to more choice in my classroom. Forever am I the student in my pursuits for my own learners.
