The COVA model is appealing because of its innovative approach to teaching and learning and its potential to improve traditional didactic models of teaching and learning. The model encourages collaboration and creativity, two essential problem-solving elements. By allowing students to work together in a supportive environment, the COVA model can help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The model can also help students learn to think critically and creatively, which are valuable assets in today's economy. The highlight of the COVA model for me is the ownership portion. I believe the closer students are acquainted with their material, the better the learning experience will be.
The part of COVA learning that is the most challenging for me is voice. I struggle with voicing my opinions or thinking to people with which I am not familiar. It is challenging to participate in class discussions or group work initially. I am often reluctant to speak up because I don't want to say something "wrong," and I don't want to make others uncomfortable. However, I know that using my voice is a critical part of learning.
I admire all the aspects of the COVA approach, but one part that resonates with me the most is choice. I believe that giving students a choice gives them a feeling of competence. I strive to give my students as many choices as possible because choice instills a sense of empowerment. Allowing choice in a learning environment can also help build good relationships.
