New Culture of Learning

Writer: LaTammie RawlsLaTammie Rawls

Douglas Thomas states learning is natural and effortless everywhere except in school. I find this very intriguing, especially since school is the place most think of when learning is the source topic. To recreate our education system, we must provide students with various ways to learn and learning opportunities. Allow students a choice and provide the necessary tools for students to explore and learn. Giving students options gives them a sense of empowerment.

Learning environments have so many pieces to consider that it often becomes challenging to focus on the whole environment. I like many educators, often find myself "teaching to the test" instead of teaching and providing learning opportunities that students need to thrive in our rapidly changing, innovative world. The pressures of district and state policies and lack of resources often hinder teachers from providing meaningful learning.

Since starting the ADL program, I have been proactive in creating my learning environment. The program provides many opportunities for me to own my learning. I try to accept challenges with a growth mindset.
