Progressive Education

Writer: LaTammie RawlsLaTammie Rawls

In the 2019-20 school year, schools nationwide were stressed from providing education in ways most educators were not accustomed. However, teachers adapted the best way they knew how and made it happen for students! Teachers coordinated zooms, learned new management systems, created virtual classrooms, and used graphics to design lessons, etc., within a brief time. So, "why haven't we seen a more significant change in education?" it certainly isn't because educators aren't capable of adapting to change.

In the age of technology, it is puzzling why there hasn't been a more significant change in education. There is countless technology available for educators to implement. However, many are slow to adopt it. I have noticed since the beginning of the pandemic that many schools have reverted to their old ways. They have stopped doing all the innovative things learned during the most challenging time of the pandemic. I suppose the cause for most schools reverting to pre-pandemic routines is primarily due to state policies. Another reason education has not changed significantly is that some people in education are just simply unwilling to change.

Just as the world changes, I believe education should evolve as well. Many teachers have similar ambitions as they aspire to teach students the skills they need to be productive members of society. We need to embrace technology in education and implement the necessary changes.
