Growth Mindset Thoughts

Writer: LaTammie RawlsLaTammie Rawls

Having a growth mindset while creating a significant learning environment is essential. As I was working on the Finks 3-column table and the Understanding by Design table, I had to dig deep and think with a growth mindset. I did it by grounding myself and thinking about my innovation plan and why I need to create a new learning culture.

My goal is to build a learning environment where students are encouraged to take risks and try new things. I plan to accomplish this goal by allowing students to learn and grow from failure.

A growth mindset can help students in many ways. For one, kids who believe their abilities and intelligence can be developed are more likely to take on challenging tasks and keep trying even when they encounter setbacks. This perseverance is key to academic success. Children with a growth mindset tend to be more resilient in the face of adversity and are better able to cope with failure. I teach kindergarten, and I know that if students form a growth mindset at a young age, it could significantly impact their education in later grade levels.

I plan to model the power of "yet" so that students can consistently observe growth mindset actions. To teach the power of yet, I must first model it myself. I will do this by sharing my stories of failure and how I overcame them. Another way I will bring attention to "yet" is by praising students' efforts.

By creating a classroom environment where students feel safe to take risks, students will be able to foster a growth mindset.
